The title, ‘Harmony’ refers to our need to live in balance with nature and the earth. We are part of nature and the molecules that make us are ours only temporarily, until they are recycled back to the earth. The body of Ayda is constructed of the branches and leaves of ivy plants, which symbolized healing, protection, and cooperation in Celtic legend. Her hips are formed from the skull of a bear. A skull because everything that lives is built upon the death of that which came before. The bear is a symbol of protection and this skull offers a place of safety for the eggs laid within it. The maiden is accompanied by three kingfishers. These beautiful birds are a symbol of balance and harmony in nature, since they live in all three spaces: air, land and water. The halo is filled with fallen leaves floating in water. Water is the miracle that allows life on our planet and it appears on the surface of the piece, to remind us of the complexity of our existence.
