Luna is the Moon, which forms the halo behind Ayda’s head. The Moon is a symbol of Nature in all its blind and driven forces, with the passing and returning of the seasons. This painting is essentially about the sheer force of Nature and how she can appear to be a calm and loving mother, but is, in reality, completely unconcerned with us and our desires. We will thrive, or not, survive, or not. Eventually we will return to the Earth from whence we came.
The hare is a sacred Celtic animal, believed to represent abundance, prosperity and good fortune and, therefore, must never be eaten. But we are eating up everything, regardless of its sacred nature, and so the hare is stripped to the bone, just as nature is being stripped by man.
Three of the hares sit in a hawthorn tree, one of the most sacred trees in Celtic Mythology. The hawthorn was a symbol of love and protection. The Celts, like many other cultures of the past, revered the natural world and treated it with intense respect. Perhaps it’s time we found that respect once more.
